History

In the summer of 1948 something truly phenomenal in the field of early childhood education was taking place. Rafe Ellis, a psychoanalyst, and his wife Laura, an early childhood educator, created a preschool program unlike any other in the area with a focus on providing a psychologically safe environment for children. TCS was revolutionary at the time.

Originally called Rafe's Rangers, The Country School (TCS) was located among the citrus groves and ranches that covered The Valley at that time. There were only three homes located on Laurel Canyon Boulevard between Magnolia and Victory, one of which remains today, housing our preschool program.

TCS expanded to include the elementary school at the request of parents in the early 1970s. Several trustees and other families with means pooled their resources to build the elementary classrooms and outdoor spaces. TCS continued to focus on the children's social, psychological, emotional and intellectual needs.

In 1979, Paul Singer became the Head of School. His strong belief in the importance of diversity, multiculturalism and inclusion redefined the student population and curriculum in both the preschool and the newly-founded elementary school. A new revolution began. With the enthusiastic support of the Board of Trustees, Paul opened the doors to those who would otherwise never have had the opportunity to experience an independent school education. As an adjunct professor at CSUN for the past 30 years, teaching courses in Urban Education, Minority Sub-Cultures and Educations, and Social Problems and Schools to future educators, Paul has demonstrated a consistent commitment to socio-economic diversity, children within the foster care system, and to children with a wide range of learning styles, all of whom have enriched our community.

In 2008, The Country School welcomed Joe Perez as its third Head of School. Joe has dedicated himself to the expansion and success of founder Rafe Ellis' unique educational vision. Perez is especially committed to expanding TCS' focus on environmental studies as well as improving the school's technology infrastructure and academic offerings.

With the current expansion into our Middle School program and our new custom-designed “sustainable” campus, TCS again draws upon the fundamental principles which have guided the school for many years. We move forward with respect, dignity, and acceptance of others, a deep appreciation of the environment, and a positive love of learning. These basic tenets will shape TCS's future as they have successfully guided our past.

Our students have benefited from the strong academic individualized programs at TCS. As they move on to secondary schools in the region and to universities across the nation, their individuality continues to enrich us all.
