Home Visits: Creating Connections and Building Relationships

At The Country School, home visits have been an integral part of promoting holistic development, including social and emotional growth.

  • The school's focus on SEL, viewed through a racialized context, guides the teacher in establishing meaningful connections, fostering self-awareness, promoting social awareness, and encouraging responsible decision-making. Restorative Justice practices further contribute to a nurturing and inclusive school environment and home visits for new students and families joining our community play a vital role in ensuring a well-rounded, positive start.

During home visits, the teacher's aim is not only to establish a bond with the child but also to support their social and emotional well-being. The teacher approaches the visit with a commitment to Restorative Justice practices, which prioritize understanding, empathy, and fostering positive relationships. The visit provides an opportunity for the child to feel safe and comfortable in their own environment while getting to know their new teacher. This connection helps promote self-awareness and self-management as the child begins to build trust and develop a sense of security with their teacher. By allowing the child to lead the visit, the teacher encourages the child's social awareness and relationship skills, respecting their autonomy and preferences.

Furthermore, the home visit is a time for the teacher to understand the child's unique background and experiences, including any racialized contexts they may encounter. This approach creates an inclusive and equitable learning environment, where the child feels valued and respected.
