Classroom Peek Week of 9/16-9/20

In this issue:

  • Blue Room is continuing to learn about the 5 senses, focusing on the Sense of Touch this week. They explored using fingerpaints, pasta, and Floam!

  • First Grade worked on handwriting and jumping into their reading and math curriculum. They started addition sentences in Math. They also had their first math and spelling tests this Friday!

  • Second graders were exposed to the parts of a friendly letter and created their own personal letters to teacher Linda, who was the first Friend of the Week. The students learned about her passion for flowers. They especially enjoyed seeing this passion come to life in both her sewing and second grade artwork! The budding artists artists created their own beautiful flower bookmarks and enjoyed some delicious potato latkes as a culmination of this extremely fun week.

  • The Fourth Grade students participated in a review of end punctuation in grammar, through a hands on experience.

  • Sixth Grade Scientist shave been in the Lab, using various methodologies to identify liquids via their properties. They have tested pH levels through , flame, and determined whether these compounds were miscible in water, miscible in ethanol, contains water, were corrosive, or toxic!

  • Eight Grade created "I Am From" poems in English, writing about themselves in the various styles they have learned in class!

In this issue:

  • Blue Room is currently learning about the 5 senses. This week, they focused on SIGHT.

  • Kindergarten used playdoh to make letters and also did a lesson with the book Chrysanthemum and graphed how many letters are in our names

  • First Grade focused on family, by drawing their family portraits as well as learning about wants and needs of families.

  • Middle School English students are creating poetry and “All of Me” towers, that displays information about each student.

  • Middle School Math students are learning about Geometry and how it is all around us, tools of algebra and a Tessalation project with Spanish, Geometry and Art.

  • Middle School History students are focusing on map making skills, Geography and European Exploration.

Cyber Education Training - Thursday, September 26, 2019

CALLING ALL PARENTS!  Are you having regular conversations in the house around texting, social media, YouTube, TikTok, Netflix and Internet Hoaxes (like Momo)? Have you ever wondered if you are setting the right rules around technology use?  Do you wonder if other parents allow their children more or less access? If any of these questions have crossed your mind…this is the session for YOU!

  • About 80% of children and teens say they have communicated with an online stranger through games and social media, but less than 10% tell a parent.

  • 60% say they wish they were less distracted by technology but don't tell parents for fear the technology will be taken away.

  • Almost all children report seeing things online those make them feel uncomfortable from content to hoaxes to digital drama. Less than 10% tell their parents!

Lori Getz, M.A., is an educator, mother, author and Internet safety expert. She has appeared on the "Dr. Phil Show," "Today," "HLN," “Dr. Drew” and several other local news and radio programs (including the Ryan Seacrest show on KIIS FM). She often lectures live, speaking to parents, teachers and students across the country. Lori recently authored “The Tech Savvy User’s Guide to the Digital World,” a book for tweens and teens. Her insight comes from both her professional and personal life working with children, teens and adults.

Classroom Peek Week of 9/5-9/7

In this issue:

  • Yellow Room measured and made lemonade, and then learned the business of hosting their own lemonade stand.

  • First Grade began the school year with resuming their meditation practice, worked on self-portraits, and met Curious George for the first time!

  • Third Grade worked on their first STEM project. The students worked in pairs to create a 12 inch tower, using only index cards. Along with developing their critical thinking skills, students demonstrated their abilities to work and solve problems together.

  • Fourth Grade discussed how to create a growth mindset for the year with sentence strips for their "Success Begins in Cans" project. They also explored the classroom in a specially-made scavenger hunt.

TCS First Day of School


We were excited to welcome and welcome back all of our students and teachers! We had a wonderful first day back, and are looking forward to a wonderful year ahead!

TCS New Parent Reception

On Tuesday, we hosted our annual New Family reception here on campus. Hosted by TCS and our Parent Association, this event is a wonderful evening that introduces the newest members of our community to our faculty, staff, specialists. and parent leaders!

In this issue:

  • Red Roomers spent their last week of school before Summer break celebrating friendship and the bonds they’ve made all year.

  • Blue Room enjoyed a week of Favorites! Students spent time creating play doh structures, building blocks and puzzles, and using paints and craft materials during art.

  • Green Room honored Sports this week, hearing a special story by classmate Quentin Zea called Goodnight Baseball by Michael Dahl then creating Sports themed art projects.

  • Yellow Room enjoyed a story time picnic outside this week with a live reading of, For You Are A Kenyan Child by Kelly Cunnane read by Juliana’s mom, Kimberly Lord.

  • Kindergarten friends took their reading outside and enjoyed independent story time by the pond.

  • 1st Grade took their Science lesson outdoors to make their own kinetic sand.

  • 3rd Grade took their reading lesson outside to storyboard scenes from Viking Ships at Sunrise by Mary Pope Osborne.

  • Middle School students paired up with their Kinder buddies for a massive game of Duck-Duck-Goose! on the meadow.




Field Day 2019!

Students enjoyed a day of movement, sports, and outdoor activities in honor of our annual Field Day event. Thank you to teacher Tina and 3/4 parent, Anthony Montgomery for leading our students in dance and hapkido moves, teacher Sigi for leading the yoga class, and teacher Tino for providing the tunes.

Congratulations to the 2019 5th Grade Class!

Our beloved 5th Graders are officially ready for Middle School! We enjoyed watching them shine as Elementary School upperclassmen, and now we look forward to seeing them grow as Sixth Graders. Congratulations to our students and families!

Sports Awards 2019

Our student athletes came together this week to celebrate their team and personal victories of the year. We are so proud of all of our athletes for a year of great teamwork and sportsmanship!

In this issue:

  • Preschool and Kindergarten students enjoyed a fun and educational field trip to Underwood Farms in Moorpark.

  • Blue Room enjoyed a lesson on cats by immersing themselves in kitty-themed literature, then using small plastic forks and different colored mixed paints to create their own cat claw paintings.

  • Green Room students ventured across campus for a chance to explore Mark Bell’s Middle School Science lab during the 7th Grade class.

  • 1st Grade continued their Science unit on Space this week by learning about different types of space vehicles. Each student created their own space craft and were quite proud of their results!

  • 3rd Grade students used cardboard boxes, recyclable, and craft materials to create their own explorer ships during a group project based lesson on European explorers.

  • 8th Grade Science students used solar cells in direct sunlight to generate electrical power between two wired motors during a group lab.

In this issue:

  • The Blue Room has been studying eggs and hatches from inside of them by creating their own diy eggs filled with glitter and other craft materials.

  • 1st Grade completed book reports on the classic Mr. and Little Miss series books during an English lesson. Each student had to choose the book that they felt best described their own personality.

  • 2nd Grade visited the Braille Institute where they teach visually impaired people how to live independently as a component to their reading of Helen Keller's biography. They learned how important their sense of touch becomes in the absence of sight, and they practiced walking with a cane, dancing, reading Braille books, and they each got to pick a clay animal made by visually impaired artists.

  • 3rd Grade practiced putting sentences in order according to the Jane Schaffer writing process during an English lesson, then students used different colors to code the sentences.

  • 8th Grade students paired in groups and used craft materials to make miniature sustainable houses that were able to retain heat, then the houses were left in direct sunlight with thermometers to track the outside temperature. After a while students used the thermometers to check the temperature of their house interiors to measure how well their materials worked.

In this issue:

  • Blue Room used recycled milk cartons to make bird feeders after reading, The Bird Nest, by P.D. Eastman.

  • Green Room used recyclable materials, aluminum foil, and bright colored paints to make their own DIY aliens and flying saucers.

  • Kindergarten spent time outside planting new seeds in the garden planters as part of their year long gardening project.

  • 2nd Grade did a biology lesson on mealworm larvae, and each student got their own mealworm in a sealed cup, poking holes in the top to allow oxygen to flow through and filling the cup with carrot and potato slices to nibble on.

  • 5th Grade spent time outside of the classroom tie dying shirts as part of a Science lesson on physical and chemical change. Students also made illustrated mind maps about the things they can't live their lives without to help with the organization of positive thoughts and ideas. 


Week of the Young Child 2019

This week our Preschool friends celebrated the Week of the Young Child, an annual spotlight on early learning, child development, their teachers, families and communities. Students enjoyed activities centered around a different daily theme: on Musical Monday they made diy tambourines, shakers, and rain sticks for a musical parade; on Tasty Tuesday students enjoyed a yogurt bar, created friendship faces out of rice cakes, and held their own lemonade stand; on Work Together Wednesday friends held a car wash and staged a post office; on Artsy Thursday students made easel paintings and WOTYC pennants to hang around their classrooms; Family Fun Friday capped off a fun filled week, and Preschool students, families, and staff came together for a picnic lunch catered by Fred from Mr. Jiffy’s. Bravo to our Preschool teachers and staff for making this such a fun, interactive, and thoughtful week for our students and families.

Teacher/Staff Appreciation Luncheon!

Our teachers and staff members are so grateful for the outpouring of love and appreciation from our students and families this past week! From coffee carts, breakfast and lunch buffets, afternoon treats, and gift boxes we would like to thank everyone for their time, effort, and thoughtfulness...we are so appreciative of our TCS community!

In this issue:

  • Blue Room spent the week learning about the different modes of transportation, and talked about how monorails use magnets in order to move by using a magnet stick and magnet cars to explore the scientific concepts of force and motion. Students also created their own paper monorails and a monorail station where we picked up toy "people". They also used a pulley system to play with a pretend hot air balloon by carrying toy passengers up and down.

  • Yellow Room visited the Art Studio to contribute work to a mural for their upcoming Week of the Young Child celebrations.

  • Kindergarten enjoyed a rainy day inside playing classic board games and journal writing in their pajamas!

  • 1st Grade took their Grass Heads from Open House to the TCS salon for a haircut and style.

  • 3rd Grade spent time outside mixing food coloring, water, and corn starch to make oobleck after reading the Dr. Seuss classic, Bartholomew and the Oobleck.

  • 6th Grade History students invited TCS classes and faculty to visit their Egyptian Wax Museum installation to show what they have been learning in this semester's unit on Ancient Egypt. Each student dressed as the Ancient Egyptian figure of their choice and delighted museum goers with by coming alive to share historical figures about their character. Students also used play doh, chalk, paint, and styrofoam to make their own pyramids.

  • Yellow Room students enjoyed a story time picnic reading of Dinosaur Bob, written by William Joyce and read by their Friend of the Week's, Jaxson Littlejohn's special guest, Uncle Dino.

  • 3rd Graders spent time practice testing for the upcoming ERB tests and students shared their Landmark Projects with the class.

  • 4th-8th Graders spent time off campus this week to participate in Field Day at the Berkeley Hall Track and Field event. 

  • MS English students traveled off campus to meet Veera Hiranandani, the author of The Night Diary.

  • MS Science students traveled off campus to CSUN for a field trip.to visit the labs of Professor Crystal Rogers. Her research topics relate to our recent molecular biology labs, in which our eighth graders manipulated DNA to make Mutant Bacteria.
